Descrizione Marguerite Young spent eighteen years writing a novel that refuses to end. Critics called it unreadable. Scholars filed it under experimental fiction and moved on. They were looking in the wrong place. AND: The Philosophy of Marguerite Young makes the case that has been waiting sixty years to be made: that Miss MacIntosh, My Darling is not a novel that contains philosophical ideas*. It is a philosophical system that chose fiction as its only honest form.* A treatise on the impossibility of stable selfhood written in stable expository prose would contradict itself before the second paragraph. Young understood this. She built something else instead. That something else has five load-bearing pillars. The self is plural, not unified, and the plurality is not a problem to be solved but the actual condition of being alive. Illusion is not the distortion of reality but the medium in which human life is genuinely lived. Grief is not a stage or a season but the permanent atmospheric condition of a world where everything you love is always already changing. The only honest ethical stance available in such a world is the witness: the one who stays in the room with the contradiction and does not flinch and does not conclude. And you build anyway, knowing the building is provisional, because the recursive attempt is the only form of integrity the system allows. This is a philosophy built for the world we are actually living in. A world that demands singular identity from plural selves. A world that mistakes the construction of reality for reality itself. A world that asks its most damaged people to perform a recovery they have not experienced. Young saw all of this. She saw it in 1965 and she had been seeing it since the first poem she wrote at age five, about loss. AND places Young in conversation with the thinkers her work anticipated and surpassed: Simone Weil on attention as ethical act, Gloria Anzaldua on the plural self and the borderland, William James and Gertrude Stein on the self as verb rather than noun, Alfred North Whitehead on a world composed of becoming rather than being. It extrapolates Young's philosophy toward the political life it makes possible, and it names the third act of feminist discourse that Young's work makes available but refused, on principle, to write herself. The sentence hasn't ended. The work hasn't ended. Neither has the world that made the work necessary. Coral Russell is an independent scholar, retired educator, and the author of The Marguerite Young Society on Substack, one of the most sustained bodies of literary and political commentary currently being produced outside academic institutions. Her Substack work includes close reading guides to all eighty-two chapters of Miss MacIntosh, My Darling, the Long Con essay series on America as failed utopia, and over six hundred posts spanning literary criticism, feminist theory, and the political imagination. She holds a Master of Science in Education and spent her career teaching students from kindergarten through adulthood. Her classrooms included schools in Missouri, South Korea, China, and Venezuela, over a range of cultures and learning contexts that shaped her understanding of how people make meaning across difference, which is another way of describing what this book is about. She publishes exclusively on Substack and in free PDFs, because the philosophy this book is built on does not permit her to do otherwise. Serious ideas belong to everyone.
