Centered on the ancient cemetery of Yortan, the book brings to life a prehistoric world where clay vessels, burial jars, ornaments, offerings, and grave customs reveal the hidden emotional and spiritual life of a long-vanished community.
The book begins by introducing Yortan as a silent field of memory, a place where the dead were carefully placed beneath the earth and accompanied by objects of meaning. Rather than focusing on kings, wars, or written records, it turns attention to ordinary people—families, children, craftspeople, mourners, and ancestors—whose lives can still be glimpsed through the material remains of their graves. In doing so, the book shows that history is not made only by monuments and inscriptions, but also by the humble objects through which people expressed love, grief, belief, and belonging.
A central theme of the book is the pithos burial tradition, in which large ceramic jars were used as containers for the dead. These jars are presented not merely as practical burial vessels, but as symbolic houses of clay—protective chambers that joined earth, craft, ritual, and memory.
