Below them, twenty kilometers across the Pampanga plain, Japanese aircraft are taking off from Clark Field. On the road between Clark and Olongapo, Japanese supply convoys are moving their cargo. In the barrios beneath the mountain, a Kempeitai officer is cultivating informants. And in the lava tubes of an island volcano that the Japanese military is too afraid to enter, the women are counting, recording, and transmitting everything they see. Daughters of the Crater is the fully documented story of a guerrilla intelligence network organized and operated by Filipino women living in the shadow of Mount Pinatubo during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, 1942 to 1945. Drawing on survivor testimony held at the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, on USAFFE guerrilla records at the MacArthur Memorial Archives, on captured Japanese Kempeitai files at the US National Archives, and on a private family archive discovered by the author in her grandmother's house, Lucia Barroso-Ines has recovered one of the most remarkable untold stories of the Pacific War. At the centre of the story are five women: Remedios Santos, a schoolteacher who organized the network's cell structure with a compartmentalization discipline that kept the Kempeitai guessing for two and a half years; Concepcion Macaraig, a market vendor who crossed Japanese checkpoints carrying concealed intelligence hundreds of times; Rosa Villanueva, a farm widow who ran the observation network on the mountain's eastern slopes facing Clark Field; Magdalena Cruz, a domestic worker who spent months inside Pinatubo's lava tube caves with Aeta guides, watching the roads below; and Leonora Mendoza, a midwife whose access to Japanese-occupied households produced a human intelligence picture of the garrison's morale and intentions that no observation post could replicate. Together they produced systematic intelligence on Japanese military activity in the Pampanga-Zambales corridor for more than two years. Their output reached MacArthur's intelligence staff. It is in the Allied planning records. And for seventy years, almost no one knew their names. This book tells the full story: how they built the network without training or institutional support, how they used the mountain's volcanic geography and the Aeta people's knowledge of its interior as their operational infrastructure, what they saw from the observation posts above Clark Field, how they survived the Kempeitai's investigation, and what liberation cost them and what it gave back. They had no weapons. They had a mountain, five notebooks, the trust of a forest people, and the specific invisibility of Filipino women in a landscape that the occupiers had decided to overlook. It was enough. For two and a half years, it was exactly enough.
