Haiti-France: Misery for Freedom is a historical, political, economic, and moral examination of one of the greatest injustices in modern history: the financial punishment imposed on Haiti after it won independence from France.
Before Haiti became associated with poverty, instability, hunger, and international crisis, the western side of Hispaniola was Saint-Domingue, the richest colony in the world. Its sugar, coffee, indigo, cotton, and ports generated immense wealth for France and helped feed European capitalism. But that prosperity was built on the forced labor, suffering, and death of enslaved Africans.
Then came the Haitian Revolution, the only successful slave revolution in world history. Enslaved men and women defeated colonial power, abolished slavery in their territory, and founded Haiti in 1804—the first Black republic in the world.
But freedom came with punishment.
In 1825, France sent warships to Haitian waters and forced the young republic to accept an indemnity of 150 million gold francs in exchange for diplomatic recognition. Haiti was ordered to compensate former French colonists for the loss of their "property," including the enslaved human beings who had liberated themselves. This was not a normal debt. It was financial coercion imposed under military threat. Haiti was forced to pay for its own freedom.
For 122 years, Haiti transferred enormous resources to France and French financial institutions. Money that could have built schools, roads, hospitals, ports, farms, courts, and public institutions was diverted to satisfy an unjust debt born from colonial violence. The result was structural poverty, political instability, institutional weakness, and a long interruption of national development.
This book follows the path from Saint-Domingue's plantation economy to the Haitian Revolution, from the birth of the first Black republic to the 1825 indemnity, from international isolation to the U.S. occupation, and from dictatorship and foreign loans to today's debate over reparations and restitution.
Haiti-France: Misery for Freedom asks urgent questions: How did the richest colony in the world become one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere? What role did France play in Haiti's economic collapse? Was the 1825 indemnity a legitimate agreement or an odious debt imposed by force? How much money was really left in Haiti? And can symbolic recognition ever be enough without material repair?
Through historical narrative, economic analysis, archival testimony, comparative models, and moral argument, Domingo Cuevas-Andújar presents a direct case for truth, memory, and restitution. The book does not seek hatred or revenge. It seeks historical clarity and justice.
This work also examines Haiti's present crisis—gang violence, hunger, weak institutions, migration, and social collapse—not as isolated events, but as consequences connected to a deeper historical wound. Haiti's suffering cannot be honestly understood without confronting slavery, colonial extraction, forced debt, occupation, dictatorship, and international neglect.
Yet this is not a message of despair. Haiti does not need pity. Haiti needs truth, justice, reconstruction, sovereignty, and a fair place in the history of human freedom.
Haiti was not born to be miserable. Haiti was born from resistance.
The debt imposed on Haiti was paid by Haiti.
The debt of justice remains unpaid by the world.
