And then, on the eighth day, a shadow moves two centimetres from where it should be. Edmund Voss has been in this room for one hundred and seven years. He knows the painting better than any living restorer. What the Paint Conceals is a hauntingly quiet novel about grief and the archaeology of the self, about the terrifying intimacy of being fully known, and about what it means to restore something — or someone — that has spent decades beneath layers of careful concealment.
