The jump should have taken seconds. Instead, it broke time. Adam did not return to the Earth he left. He arrived at an Earth just beginning to bloom with humanity. No satellites. No nations. No history books. Only river valleys, early settlements, and the fragile spark of civilization learning how to stand. He understood the implications instantly. If he interfered recklessly, the present he once knew would collapse under paradox. The device he carried—still active, still beyond comprehension—had not merely bent physics. It had folded chronology itself. Adam was now stranded in the past. And so he adapted. He became what history required him to be. He stood at the edges of emerging civilizations—watching Sumer and Egypt rise almost simultaneously along their rivers. He observed power gather in the hands of kings who declared themselves divine. He walked the streets of Rome before it knew it would rule the world, and later watched that same empire rot from within. He fought in arenas to blend into the roar of the crowd. He marched with tribes who would one day be blamed for Rome's fall. He vanished into forests when humanity's ambitions grew too loud. He learned a discipline more difficult than combat: Restraint. Adam could calculate outcomes centuries ahead. He could shift battles with a single decision. He could redirect rulers with a whisper. But he did not. He stepped into legend only where history itself was uncertain—where myth blurred into memory and no fixed timeline could be broken. He became a name that scholars would debate. A warrior who defended kingdoms alone. A ghost in the margins of empire. He lived through ages of steel and blood, through innovation and collapse, through faith and fanaticism. He watched weaponry evolve from bronze to iron, from sword to siege, each advancement a reminder of humanity's relentless drive to overcome itself. And through it all, he carried the device. The object that sent him here. The object that may yet send him somewhere else. Adam was created to retrieve it. Now he must survive long enough to understand it.
