Old customs once dismissed as superstition—water poured at dawn, salt laid on stairways, doors opened only after certain bells—are suddenly aligning with fragments of ancient stone uncovered beneath Canal Mouth. When a collapsed wall reveals a hidden lane beneath the canal, Lucen and Elara descend into darkness and discover something that changes everything they thought they knew about Oakhaven. The buried structures are not ruins. They are part of a living system—an ancient civic network designed to carry the voices of ordinary people before the authority of towers and rulers could claim the city's truth. The deeper they investigate, the more the pattern spreads. Across Oakhaven, houses begin to answer the bells in strange ways. Cups tremble. Floors shift. Long-forgotten inscriptions emerge beneath plaster and soot. It becomes clear that the lower districts have been preserving fragments of the city's original design for generations—without ever knowing what they were protecting. But the discovery carries a terrible implication. The Crown did not simply build over the old city. It buried it deliberately. If the ancient system beneath Oakhaven awakens fully, it could restore the power of the streets and expose the centuries of manipulation that shaped the city's history. It could also plunge Oakhaven into chaos as forgotten alliances, hidden routes, and suppressed truths rise into the open. At the center of the storm stands Selyn—the woman the city has begun to call its witness.
