The Philistines had captured the Ark of the Covenant in battle, thinking they had defeated Israel's God. They placed the Ark in Dagon's temple as a trophy, a symbol of their victory. But they were about to learn a hard truth: You cannot put the living God in a box, and you cannot make Him bow to your substitutes. The story gets even more dramatic. The priests set Dagon back up, but the next morning, Dagon had fallen again—this time with his head and hands cut off, leaving only the stump of his body.
