WHEN THE HEART CHOOSES
Sofia could hardly believe it when she introduced Saulo, her boyfriend, to her family and they turned their backs on her.
"You should have told them I was Black," Saulo remarked.
"Imagine if my father is racist! He's always greeting all the Black people in the area, he even hugs them, kisses their children…"
"For political reasons, my sister," her brother observed.
In the name of the love Sofia felt for Saulo, she was able to throw away all the comfort and status she had in her family to marry him.
Ettore, her brother, decides to become a priest to hide his homosexuality from everyone and spare his father, a rising politician, from a scandal.
The following is an excerpt from the work:
Arriving at the riverbank, Caio parked the motorcycle and the two walked among the trees, exchanging pleasantries. Ettore laughed at Caio's observations about people and everyday situations. For him, the boy's observations were always very funny and pertinent. After taking a walk, they returned to the riverbank and sat down there. Caio turned to his friend and said seriously:
– I want to talk to you. Actually, "want" isn't quite the right word. I need to. I love you.
– You're crazy!
– Crazy, why? – Caio defended himself, at the top of his voice. – Because I love you?
– Two men don't love each other, Caio!
– We are "men" in quotation marks, Ettore, and you know that!
Caio regretted what he said instantly. He was afraid that his words would offend his friend, which they did. Ettore began to cry and ran to the edge of the lake. Caio got up and ran after his friend.
– I hate you – Ettore yelled, noticing his approach. – I hate you when you say such nonsense.
– You know it's not nonsense, Ettore. What we feel for each other is real. It's love.
– All I know is that two men can't feel what we feel.
– I didn't ask to feel what I feel for you, Ettore! It happened. It simply happened! I don't know who governs love, but whoever it is, it doesn't see sex, color, social class, or religion... If it were a matter of choice, you can be sure I wouldn't choose to love you as I do, but it's a matter of the heart. And when the heart chooses...
– I'm going to distance myself from you, Caio, stop being your friend if you don't stop with this talk, with this fixed, absurd, and immoral idea.
– If you distance yourself from me, you'll be distancing yourself from yourself too, Ettore. And you know that. You love me the same way I love you, I know, I feel it. And know that I'm not going to give up on our love so easily.
– Take me away from here, Caio, now, please.
Caio thought it best to grant his friend's request. But life takes unexpected turns, and in these turns, the Guiarone family learns that love has no color, no race, no age, and that every form of love should be lived fully. And that is the greatest lesson for everyone's spiritual evolution.
WHEN THE HEART CHOOSES speaks of the law of sowing and reaping. If you plant good, you will reap good. If you plant evil, you will not be able to reap good things. It also addresses the harmful effects of prejudice, racism, and intolerance towards others and oneself.
