Descrizione
The Mohill Covenants is a genealogical and historical work by Denis Kilpatrick, first published in Dublin in 1963 by Doyle and Sons. The work is a detailed account of the landed families connected with Mohill Castle and the Manor of Mohill in the Barony of Mohill, County Leitrim, Ireland, covering a period from the late sixteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. It is structured in the genealogical method of Joseph Foster, combining chart pedigrees, narrative pedigrees, and extended historical exposition, and it remains the only published primary source for several of the families and transactions it describes. The principal subjects of the work are the Crofton family, who held the manor by Crown patent from the reign of Charles I until the dissolution of their interest through debt and encumbrance in the mid-nineteenth century; the Kane family, originally of Dublin, who acquired the Mohill estate through a programme of purchase, mortgage acquisition, and marriage alliance with the Nisbett family of Derrycarne; and the Cambreth family, whose name was preserved through a Name and Arms clause executed in 1932 and whose subsequent partnership with the author gave rise to the Lauro Cambreth leather enterprise. The work also treats at length the Hyde family of Frenchpark, County Roscommon, into whom the Kanes married, establishing a connexion with Douglas Hyde, later the first President of Ireland. In addition to these principal families, the work contains pedigrees and historical notices of numerous lesser and collateral families of the Barony of Mohill, including the Reynolds of Lough Scur, the Clements of Kilronan, the Godleys of Kilgarvan, the Pallisers of Rathcline, the Berminghams of Jamestown, the Harwards of Drumshanbo, the Whitleys of Annaduff, the Moffats of Mohill, the Shanleys of Aghacashel, and others, many of whom do not appear in any other published genealogical compilation. The later portions of the work treat of the legal mechanics of Name and Arms clauses in Anglo-Irish probate law, the Cambreth Instrument of 1932, the Moretti family of Lucca and Dublin, the Lauro Cambreth bridle leather enterprise and its dependence upon the murdari hide trade of the Leitrim agricultural economy, the destruction of the enterprise during the Foot and Mouth outbreak of 1941, the death of John Lauro Cambreth in December of that year, and the subsequent dispersal of the Cambreth descendants into France, Germany, and India. The work draws upon the Registry of Deeds, the records of the Encumbered Estates Court, parish registers from the dioceses of Ardagh and Elphin, the Return of Owners of Land (1876), the matriculation records of Trinity College Dublin, probate records, estate papers, and the personal recollection of the author, who was the business partner of John Lauro Cambreth from 1934 until the latter's death. Kilpatrick stated in his preface that the work was compiled as a debt of conscience owed to his late partner, and that the documents upon which it was based would have been lost to posterity had they not been set down and published. The genealogical apparatus follows the conventions established by Joseph Foster in The Royal Lineage of Our Noble and Gentle Families(1884), and the work has been cited in subsequent studies of County Leitrim landed families and of the Anglo-Irish gentry of the western province.
