Depression era outlaws Bonnie & Clyde were some of the worst criminals in American history. The duo led a crime spree across multiple states from 1932 to 1934, murdering a Temple, Texas, grocer for his car, in addition to robbing stores, gas stations and banks. The Bonnie & Clyde gang—which included not only Bonnie & Clyde but several other criminals such as Ray Hamilton and Henry Methvin, were responsible for fatally shooting to death four innocent civilians and nine law enforcement officers. Bonnie and Clyde's crime spree spanned through Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Louisiana and Arkansas. Bonnie & Clyde's real names were Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker. After being arrested for burglary, Clyde Barrow was incarcerated at Eastham Prison Farm in Sept. 1930. Clyde Barrow, who was raped by other inmates while imprisoned in Eastham Prison Farm from September 1930 to February 1932, vowed to get revenge for his poor treatment at this Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison. On Jan. 16, 1934, after already facilitating the smuggling of two Colt .45 automatic firearms into the prison to convicts Ray Hamilton and Joe Palmer, through hiding an inner tube containing guns and ammunition that was placed under a drainage culvert, near Eastham Prison Farm's Camp 1, Clyde Barrow, Bonnie Parker and Jimmy Mullins approached the prison farm in Clyde Barrow's Ford V-8 Deluxe Sedan while the convict workers Joe Palmer and Ray Hamilton were working in the prison labor yard. After Joe Palmer fatally shot long arm man prison guard Major Joe Crowson with one of the smuggled Colt .45's, Clyde Barrow fired a volley of Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) fire at the heads of everyone in the field, causing both prisoners and guards to dive for cover. Bonnie Parker honked the car horn to signal to the escaping convicts and convicts Joe Palmer, Ray Hamilton, Henry Methvin and Hilton Bybee then began running south. The facilitation of escape of Joe Palmer, Ray Hamilton, Henry Methvin and Hilton Bybee, which resulted in the death of prison guard Major Joe Crowson, was the last straw for Bonnie & Clyde in the mind of General Manager of the Texas Prison System Colonel Lee Simmons, who subsequently gave the tough, 49-year-old ex-Texas Ranger Frank Hamer the assignment of finding and assassinating the criminal outlaws Bonnie & Clyde for their robberies of banks, stores and gas stations, in addition to their violent acts against Eastham Prison Farm personnel, including guard Olan Bozeman and "Long arm man" prison guard Major Crowson.
