On a cold morning in Harare, an event unfolded that might, at first glance, appear to be a curious footnote in legal history: the trial and conviction of a man named Timothy Chiminya. His crime was not theft, nor assault, but the far more profound charge of "undermining the authority of the President." Chiminya's defiance stemmed from his audacious, yet deeply historical, claim to the title of King Munhumutapa, the supreme ruler of a pre-colonial empire that governed the land centuries ago. He asserted that his mandate to rule was not granted by an election or a written constitution, but by the eternal decree of the royal ancestral spirits, the Mhondoro.
This single, explosive legal case forms the central focus of this book. It is a confrontation that reaches far beyond the boundaries of a simple Zimbabwean courtroom, laying bare the central, unresolved tension plaguing many post-colonial African nations: where does true sovereignty reside?
