"Isn't that Gabriel Webb sitting by the window? 'Wow!' Stephanie said, her eyes wide. 'What's he doing here? Visiting the slums?' "Do you mind?" Rachel said, pulling a tray of pastries out of the oven, praying her friend would think her blush was coming from the heat. "Coming to my cafe isn't like visiting the slums!" "Well, you know what I meant," Stephanie exclaimed, tying her apron. "I've never seen him here before, have you? Come on, admit he doesn't come to Rachel's Pantry often." "I have no idea where people usually get their coffee," Rachel replied, pretending she hadn't been wondering for twenty minutes. "The only thing that matters is that I pay for it." "Yeah, sure, it doesn't matter if you choose this particular location. I know Kingsbridge isn't very big, but it has a couple of good hotels, and I have it on good authority that when an executive from Webb's Pharmaceuticals comes, he usually stays at the County," he replied. "What did he say?" "I haven't spoken to him," Rachel replied. Patsy took her order. "So what did he order?" "Come on, for God's sake, Steph!" Rachel said, looking at her friend in disbelief. "A cup of tea, just so you know. Satisfied?" "Tea?" Stephanie said, looking at the occupant of the window table. "Didn't you order coffee?" "Tea," Rachel repeated softly. "Would you mind getting on with the lasagna? At this rate, we'll be done by lunchtime before we've even made a thing." "Okay, okay," Stephanie said, raising her hands mockingly. "I'll be right there," she added, gathering up a pile of plates. "You know what? I ran into Mrs. Austen on High Street, and she was telling me how great Mark and Liz are in Australia. There was no way I could stop her. That's why I'm late. Apparently they're having a beautiful house near Sydney, and Mark has a company that sells boats, water skis, and all that. Pretty cool, huh? "What? Oh, yeah," Rachel replied. He hadn't heard anything. He was paying attention to Gabriel Webb, even though he tried to pretend otherwise. He suspected that, perhaps, he'd gone there to talk about Andrew. It couldn't be. It was ridiculous. She hadn't seen Andrew in over a year. All she knew was that he lived in London and that his father had moved back to their mansion in Kingsbridge a year ago, but that had nothing to do with her. Andrew had hurt her in so many ways, and Rachel wanted nothing to do with him or his family. Her mother was dead, but if Gabriel had come to warn her not to try to contact her beloved son, he was wasting his time. Rachel had no intention of letting that man back into her life. —How long has he been there? Rachel knew perfectly well that Steph was referring to Gabriel, but since she didn't want to talk about it, she decided to deliberately misinterpret it. —Five years, I think. He and Liz left when Hannah was one. Has Mrs. Austen told you if they've had children? "Very funny," Stephanie replied. "You know I didn't mean Mark Austen. What's wrong with you? Are you scared of that man or something?" "Gabriel Webb?" Rachel blushed. "Of course not, but I don't understand what all the fuss is about. He's just another client, for God's sake! The fact that I was dating his son a while back..." "That makes it sound like a one-night stand," her friend protested, putting cheese on her pasta. "You and Andrew dated for months. Everyone thought you were serious until his dad got involved and forced him to dump you." —It wasn't…
