Mr. Cipriani can now receive her. Katy Brennan looked at the angular-faced, middle-aged woman she had met earlier in the lobby of Cipriani headquarters and who had escorted her to the director's floor, where she had been waiting for over twenty minutes. She didn't want to be nervous, but she was. She'd been called to her office in Shoreditch, where she worked as an IT specialist in a small group of four, and informed that Lucas Cipriani, the god to whom everyone answered, required her presence. She had no idea why he would want to talk to her, but she suspected it had something to do with the complex work she was currently working on, and although she told herself he probably just wanted to go over some minor details with her, she was nervous nonetheless. Katy stood up, regretting that she had not been informed in advance of that meeting, because she would have dressed in something more in keeping with the luxurious atmosphere that surrounded her. He was wearing jeans and a T-shirt, a backpack, and a light jacket, perfect for the cool spring air, but completely unsuitable for that eight-story glass building. She took a deep breath and didn't look left or right as she followed the assistant down the carpeted hallway, past the executive offices and the many meeting rooms where multimillion-dollar deals were being made. Finally, they reached a waiting room. At the back was a massive, closed wooden door that alone would strike fear into anyone arbitrarily summoned by the company's CEO—a man with a legendary ability to close deals and turn straw into gold. Katy took a deep breath and stood back as the assistant opened the door. Staring blankly out the huge reinforced glass window that separated him from the street, Lucas Cipriani thought that this meeting was the last thing he needed to ruin his day. But he couldn't avoid her. A security breach had been opened in the agreement he'd been working on for the past eight months, and that woman was going to have to pay the consequences. That was that clear. This was the agreement of his life, and there was no way he was going to jeopardize it. When his assistant knocked on the door and entered the office, Lucas turned slowly, his hand in his pants pocket, and looked at the woman who was about to lose her job, even though she didn't know it. He narrowed his eyes and realized he should be more aware of the people who worked for him, because he wasn't expecting this. He'd been expecting a computer geek with glasses, but the girl in front of him didn't look like a computer genius, but rather a hippie. She was wearing faded jeans and a T-shirt with the name of a band he'd never heard of. She wore black, masculine-style boots that looked like they were for construction work. She had a backpack slung over her shoulder with some kind of jacket over it; it was clear she'd just taken it off. Her dress code contradicted everything he associated with a woman, but she had the kind of copper-toned hair a painter would love to capture on canvas, and a delicate face with large, bright green eyes that held his gaze. "Miss Brennan," he said, heading toward the desk as Vicky, his secretary, closed the heavy door behind him. "Please sit down."
