The rest was filled with furniture. "I'm pretty sure I don't need most of it, and I don't know where I'm going to put it," she added, looking around her new, small London apartment, which consisted of one bedroom, a bathroom, and a living room-kitchen. It was a stark contrast to the three-story mansion he had always lived in with his father. But beggars couldn't be choosers. Lia wasn't exactly a beggar, though. She still had some of the money she'd inherited from her mother, but the lifestyle she'd been accustomed to throughout her twenty-five years was a thing of the past. All of her father's assets and accounts were legally frozen until his debts were settled, something that would still take months, if not years. And given her father's financial situation before his death, Lia doubted there would be anything left. Her family home was one of those assets, and although Lia could have continued living there until a final judgment on the debts was issued, she didn't want to stay there without her father. Besides, the financial sharks were already wide open, ready to take over whatever remained of Fairbanks Industries. Lia had used her own money to pay for her father's funeral, and the down payment on that apartment. She had resigned from all her positions in the charities with which he had collaborated and had to look for a job to have a salary with which to feed himself in addition to paying the rent. He had taken control of his life, and it gave him a peculiar satisfaction to have been able to do so. Cathy shrugged. "I guess when you packed the boxes you thought you needed everything," she said, though she didn't add what they both knew: that the boxes contained not only Lia's things, but also tons of mementos from her father. Lia had kept all those boxes stored for two months while staying with her friend Cathy and her husband Rick. It had been a balm for her battered emotions, but it wasn't a situation that could last forever, and that's why she'd decided to move into that apartment. Although she had already overcome the terrible shock of finding her father dead in his office from a sudden heart attack, she sometimes longed to feel the numbness of her senses that had accompanied it. The sense of loss she felt was constant and profound, and it still assailed her at the most unexpected moments. "I think we deserve a glass of wine," Cathy said cheerfully. "Do you have any idea which box it might be in?"
