I hate men. I hate tall ones, short ones, old ones, young ones… I hate men! Alison Quintano held the phone away from her ear for a moment. The distance barely diminished the intensity of Lily's words. It was as if the petite woman who had dominated a significant portion of Alison's childhood was here, in the lonely doctor's office in Hades, instead of in a modern Seattle apartment thousands of miles away. "You hate men. Okay. I get it," Alison replied, trying to stop Lily from yelling in her ear; her sister had been going on about the same thing for four minutes. Come on, calm down and tell me what happened. Even as she said it, Alison had the slightest impression that she knew what the problem was. Or rather, who. Lily, who didn't even listen to her sister, interrupted her and continued talking. She was very angry, and you could see she was trying her best not to let her hurt feelings show. But the anguish was there. How could I have been so blind? —I especially hate sneaky plastic surgeons. Well, that was starting to take shape, Alison thought. Lily's fiancé, Allen, was a plastic surgeon. Alison felt guilty for feeling relieved. instead of anguish. But she couldn't deny it to herself. She had never liked Allen. —You mean there's no wedding? Alison imagined her older brother, Kevin, jumping for joy. Of the three, Kevin, who had raised them since his father's death, hated Allen the most. Whenever he spoke about him to the others, he referred to Allen as "the artificial surgeon." But given Lily's character, none of them had given her their opinion on Allen. It would only have made her more resentful. Of course, suddenly, it seemed like she was the only one who had figured out what Allen was like. Alison had a hard time not letting out a cry of happiness. Lily, who felt like a caged animal, began pacing around the kitchen. Normally cooking relaxed her, but right now the only thing that could calm her down would be making mincemeat out of her fiancé. "Ex-fiancé," she told herself vengefully. How could he have done such a thing to her? —Not only is there no wedding, but I was about to cut off his head too. —he snorted angrily, trying not to think about how the betrayal had felt. With the phone between her ear and shoulder, Alison was adding up the bill for a burly miner who'd just left the doctor's office. It took her a few moments to decipher her brother Jimmy's illegible handwriting. Even though he was a 5 | Marie Ferrarella - LostInYourArms doctor, it was too horrible. —Lily, do you want to explain to me what happened or am I going to have to guess on my own? Alison's words didn't help her focus on the conversation. Lily looked around for something to calm her anger. She felt like a kettle about to explode. He took a deep breath and tried to start from the beginning. —Allen kept complaining about the same thing: that I only think about work, that I'm never spontaneous… Lily pressed her feet together, thinking how foolish she had been. Could it really be that this had been happening right under her nose this whole time? "So I decided to act spontaneously. I asked Arthur to replace me at Lily's, grabbed a bottle of our finest champagne, prepared a lunch of the most exquisite treats, and went to her apartment to surprise her."
