"I've never seen such beautiful ones," Cara said, looking in the window of the shoe shop on Chapel Street.
"You have to buy them," Gracie insisted.
—They're a whim, I don't really need them.
—Don't be silly and buy them.
"They're a Kate Madden design," Cara pointed out.
-AND?
—Well, they cost more than my father earned in a week. —That's the stupidest excuse I've ever heard, even coming from you,
"The most frugal person I know. But how much do you make a week?" Gracie asked sarcastically.
—More than my father.
"Well, let's not talk about it anymore," Gracie said, taking Cara's arm. "You're going to buy them. No more buying clothes at flea markets and sales. If you want to work in television, you have to take care of your image. You need to make a good impression, and those shoes are going to help you achieve that."
Cara looked at the shoes in the window once more. They were red, satin-lined, and had heels so high and thin they could be used as weapons if necessary. They were very elegant. Cara shook her head. The most important thing for her right now was getting the job. She would turn twenty-seven in a couple of months, and if she wanted to finish paying off the mortgage on her apartment by then, the only thing she could do, short of winning the lottery, was get the job. And she was convinced she would. That apartment would be hers very soon.
Gracie was right. In the world she was about to move into from now on, she couldn't keep looking for bargain-priced clothes. If she wanted to get that high-paying job as a stylist on the new Australian TV show, she had to make the best impression.
"You're joking, aren't you?" Adam said, surprised.
"No. I'm going to be the star of my own TV show," Chris replied with a broad smile. Adam could tell he was serious. His friend and business partner was a TV genius and never joked around.
—. I signed the contract this morning.
Adam stood up and began pacing around the room.
—I wish I'd known what you were planning to do beforehand. You should have consulted me first.
—I didn't have to do it.
Adam stopped and looked at his friend.
—You were the one who decided that I would be the one in charge of the company's public relations, and that's why, if you were planning to do something that could affect Revolution Wireless ' image , you should have consulted me first.
"This has nothing to do with the company," Chris said, "nor with your position as marketing director at Revolution Wireless . I just wanted you to know, as a friend of mine."
—Fine. Well, let me tell you, that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. A TV contest to find a partner? Come on, man! If it's a girl you need, we can go out there and find one. There are plenty of women who'd love to go out with one of the richest bachelors in Australia. I can find you one right now on any street, Adam said, taking his friend's arm.
—But I don't want to end up with the first girl I find on the street.
It was clear Chris was getting angry, so Adam tried to calm things down.
—That's not what I meant and you know it.
"I want a woman by my side who understands me," Chris explained. "I want a wife, not one of your girlfriends. The women you're dating are the antithesis of what any sane man would want in a wife, except for your father. If you want to talk about relationships, we can start with yours."
Adam ignored that comment.
—What I'm saying is, you can have any woman you want. By the way, why are we so serious?
