As meth, heroin, crack, and cocaine flood his system, Craig's mind begins to fracture. Psychosis wraps around his thoughts until he is pacing the halls with a gun, seeing threats where there are none, convinced he's protecting the family he is actually tearing apart.One night, after telling Tamara he's going to do what he wants, Craig steps outside and fires his gun inside city limits. The police come. Tamara covers for him, but the look in her eyes changes from love to fear. When she later tells him she is dying, Craig can't cope. He runs further into the dark web and into harder drugs, until paranoia and rage explode into a violent fight that sends the children fleeing with their grandmother, Gennie, and leaves Tamara struck and terrified, unsure if his fist or his gun made contact. Craig barely remembers the moment himself. What follows is a downward spiral of broken windows, condo break-ins, and a brutal clash with the police that finally lands him in prison, hated by Tamara's family and disowned by his own kids, Karissa and Afton. Behind bars, stripped of excuses and distractions, Craig begins to see the wreckage he created. He writes letters he never sends, attends AA and NA meetings just to get out of his cell, and slowly discovers that his lifelong silence, social struggles, and extreme reactions were rooted in undiagnosed autism that drugs turned into full-blown psychosis. The diagnosis doesn't erase what he's done, but it gives him a language for the storm inside his head—and a starting point for change.When he is finally released, Craig has nothing left but a fragile commitment to sobriety. In a big city far from the small town he destroyed, he earns his peer support certificate, joins recovery fellowships, and builds a small business helping others climb out of the same pit that almost killed him. Two years clean, he can walk past the beer aisle without craving; the smell now makes him sick instead of hungry. Just when life starts to stabilize, an email arrives—from Tamara. She has seen his efforts from afar. She isn't promising forgiveness or reunion, but she is willing to listen.Through the Fire follows Craig as he tries to live a life worthy of the family he lost: offering amends instead of excuses, honoring old promises in new ways, and accepting that some scars may never fully heal.
