Hrafn is a disgraced ex-enforcer working as a private investigator in the perpetual, rain-soaked gloom of Vík, a domed city on Titan. His life is a monotonous cycle of cheap synth-ale and pettier cases, his only companions the cynical AI in his skull and the painful echoes of the past that flicker through his glitchy, black-market prosthetic eye.
His routine is shattered by the arrival of Lilja, a "chrome-ghost" of impossible perfection, a consciousness housed in a synthetic body. She presents him with an insane case: her creator and lover, the brilliant tech mogul Sturla Jökulsson, was murdered. The problem is, according to every database in the system, Sturla Jökulsson never existed. Skeptical and weary, Hrafn dismisses her as a malfunctioning android, until his faulty eye shows him a visceral, undeniable vision of Lilja's raw, human grief. The case is real, and Hrafn, compelled by a mystery that defies logic, agrees to investigate.
The investigation quickly spirals into a paranoid nightmare. Hrafn witnesses a full psychic echo of the murder, seeing Sturla not just killed, but "un-written" from reality by a shimmering temporal weapon wielded by men in grey. Soon after, a powerful, clandestine agency known as the Continuity Directorate begins to move against him, freezing his funds, manipulating his environment, and proving they can control his reality. During a violent ambush, Hrafn makes a terrifying discovery: his eye doesn't just see the past; it shows him the enemy's edits to the timeline moments before they happen, allowing him to survive. He is no longer just a PI; he is a temporal anomaly, and his greatest flaw has become his only weapon.
Forced into the city's underbelly, Hrafn trades his darkest secret—the truth about the partner he failed years ago—to a paranoid memory broker for access to the "Un-Database," a graveyard of deleted information. There, he uncovers the whole conspiracy: the Directorate's motives and, most crucially, a backup of Lilja's original human consciousness.
In a desperate gambit, Hrafn restores Lilja's true self. The flood of human memory and emotion brings with it a key secret: the knowledge to build a "Dead Man's Switch," a temporal failsafe that can jump their consciousnesses back ten minutes upon death. When the Directorate's elite agents storm their hideout and kill Hrafn, the switch is triggered. Thrown back in time with perfect knowledge of their own demise, Hrafn and Lilja choreograph a brilliant, impossible counter-attack, turning the tables on their hunters. They escape Titan as fugitives, in possession of the very technology that nearly destroyed them, leaving a powerful and ruthless enemy in their wake. Adrift in the silent dark of space, Hrafn, a man who was haunted by a past he couldn't change, now holds the power to rewrite time—and finally finds the peace to let it be.
