This work presents a comprehensive study of the history, theology, and evolving practice of asceticism in the Catholic tradition, spanning from its early Christian origins to contemporary expressions in the digital age. Asceticism, defined as the disciplined pursuit of holiness through self-denial, prayer, and sacrifice, is explored in its various dimensions, including solitude, fasting, silence, suffering, and acts of charity. The study examines the contributions of key figures, such as the Desert Fathers and Mothers, St. Benedict, St. Francis of Assisi, St. John of the Cross, and modern saints like St. Teresa of Calcutta and Dorothy Day, who exemplified ascetical holiness in their lives and teachings.
The discussion follows the historical development of asceticism, from the early Church's emphasis on martyrdom and monastic withdrawal to the medieval synthesis of mystical and penitential spirituality and the reforms of the Counter-Reformation.
