The history of naval warfare is as old as history itself. One of the earliest examples of the importance of naval warfare is found in the Battle of Salamis in 480 BC, during the Greco-Persian Wars. This engagement, in which a considerably outnumbered Greek fleet defeated the Persian navy. Other notable clashes were the Battle of the Nile which facilitated Julius Caesar's influence in Aegyptus alongside Cleopatra, or the Battle of Accio which determined Rome's transition to Empire.
The impact of naval battles is not limited to antiquity. In the Middle Ages, the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 marked the end of Ottoman expansion in the Mediterranean, and how can we forget the Spanish Invincible Armada putting its own name to the test in English waters. Moving forward in time, it is mandatory to remember the European naval coalition trying to stop Napoleon at Trafalgar.
With the advent of the Industrial Revolution and the World Wars, the Battle of Jutland in 1916 was the major naval engagement of World War I, with the British Royal Navy, by maintaining the naval blockade on Germany, contributed significantly to the economic and military attrition of the German Empire. World War II further expanded the theater of naval warfare, with crucial engagements in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific. The Battle of Midway in 1942 was a turning point in the Pacific war.
