Dr. Jones shows us how to heal both ourselves and our society by applying the principles and strategies of great defenses that he used to prevent his granddaughter's recurring ear infections. His wife Jerry, knew from her experience as a Special Ed teacher that early onset ear infections were associated with language and learning problems. And leading researchers agree, like Jerome Klein, the co-author of the textbook Otitis Media in Infants and Children. At dinner one time with him he instructed Dr. Jones to tell everyone he talked to that, "This Jerry agrees with your Jerry." That led to his development of Xlear® Nasal Spray, now used regularly by close to a million users around the world. In the beginning Dr. Jones knew it prevented ear problems by up to 95% in his own practice, but he has learned much more about how it works, and how revolutionary it and the ideas behind it are for both our healthcare and society. Revolutionary, but simple; just help our defenses to work better. Our warfare with microbes began when Pasteur showed us they caused our illnesses. We have ignored his foil, Claude Bernard, who argued that the soil where the microbes are planted is just as important, and that is all about our defenses—if they are optimal we don't get sick. Optimizing our defenses is easy; it's done with safe foods that we call 'Hippocratic drugs' because he told us that our food should be our drugs. But defense medicine is the 'half of medicine' that is unknown in our medical school curricula. Dr. Jones wants to end the war on microbes, which we continue to fight with ever more sophisticated and costly drugs because it's the only option we see. This is the arms race we are losing, as the WHO shows, and estimates it will cost us 10 million lives annually by 2050 by continuing. We need another option and defense medicine allows us to negotiate a win-win peace. During his 50 years of practicing medicine, he has witnessed how profits set priorities and regulatory agencies stymie innovation. Early in the pandemic, his son, who now runs the company, paid for a study showing that it stops the virus from holding on to us. The simple, effective, and easily affordable spray could have made a huge difference when we needed it most, but they got no help from the FDA or the pharmaceutical industry. In order to tell people about it, it must be an FDA approved drug, and the expense of that process means the 'drug' cannot be a commonly available food. The industry must be profitable, so prices would be high enough that people would just make it themselves (the recipe is in the book). The need for profit controls the system. Defense medicine is the creative destruction that our system needs to refocus on health rather than profit. Dr. Jones is a retired, board-certified osteopathic family physician. All his life, he has been interested in what works and has had plenty of experience with things that don't. Before studying medicine, Dr. Jones spent six years in college and graduate school studying history, with a special interest in the history of science and ideas.
