Descrizione

Parents seeking therapy for their child often function unconsciously in their role as parent, unaware of their contributions to the family dysfunction. They want to fix their child; when it is themselves who often need 'fixing'. Raising Grit was born when therapist Beth Canalichio recognized the same scenario presented itself with every new family walking through her door. She noticed families stuck in toxic cycles causing them sadness, anger, and pain. As an effective therapist she needed to help parents look in the mirror just as she'd had to do. Helping parents reflect on their childhood is essential in the therapy process, supporting them to become better parents and overall human beings. "Therapists cannot assist parents in moving forward until the parents themselves complete a thorough family history and personal inventory of their lives. By encouraging self-awareness and ownership, parents make the necessary changes to become healthier in every possible way." Stated Beth about her proven methodology which helped break cycles, allowed parents to remain vigilant and avoid slipping into old, unwell behaviors. In each chapter, Raising Grit gives parents the opportunity to heal their unresolved issues, and change their negative thoughts and behaviors stemming from persistent patterns learned in their own childhood. For all of this to be accomplished, the caveat of blaming the family of origin and sinking into victimhood are to be avoided; whilst increasing self-understanding and change. The process of getting connected to one's deeply rooted issues can be a painstaking process. In Raising Grit, Beth guides parents with tough love and compassion throughout. The self-evaluation questions at the beginning of each chapter invite readers to reflect and achieve the greatness they seek. By participating and committing to the process within the book, the reader achieves the best possible results for themselves and their family. In addition to helping parents heal their hurt, Canalichio draws attention to the widespread phenomenon of parents doing too much for their kids, leaving kids feeling incapable, self-absorbed, entitled, and lazy. Raising Grit highlights crucial parenting topics, aiding readers to develop strong minded, confident, competent, and respectful children. Much like author and parenting expert Adele Faber, Canalichio believes the most important and crucial tools for parents are to learn how to talk, listen actively, acknowledge, and validate their child, without coddling or giving into them. Raising Grit explains how to accomplish this. Teaching a child to think for themselves is vital, especially in the ever-changing social and political climate. Beth believes this is the ultimate challenge and suggests ways parents can work with their child to develop confidence and critical thinking. This is done by letting children fail, asking questions, and encouraging them without harsh criticisms. Successfully navigating the complexities of this world will require solid coping strategies and communication skills. Raising Grit urges parents to assist their child with personal responsibility for their feelings rather than blaming others, respond instead of react, teach how to make well thought out choices be direct and truthful communicating "you can handle this". Readers will find four main models of communication skills with examples of the best style for parents to use with their child. Raising Grit covers how to discuss and cope with difficult topics such as healthy eating and regular movement for optimal physical and mental well-being, divorce and blended families, sex, drugs, and alcohol. Raising Grit asserts how imperative it is for parents to step up and be there for their child, driving home the concept of lifting people up by taking an honest and direct approach, rather than enabling or victimizing them.
