From the cursed poetry of "The Curse of the Forbidden Poem", where reciting "Tomino's Hell" brings death to all who hear it, to the twisted hunger of "The Vegan's Wife: A Futakuchi-Onna Tale of Hunger and Control", where a second mouth gnashes beneath a woman's hair, each story offers a unique and visceral journey into terror. Words have the power to kill, hunger becomes monstrous, and survival is never guaranteed.
In "Hachishakusama", a towering eight-foot spirit with an insidious chant—"Po… Po… Po…"—stalks the storm-battered town of Miyazaki, forever changing the lives of Shizuko and her friend Sora. The chilling encounter on the desolate Aoshima Island becomes a haunting that lingers long after they return home, reminding them that some terrors never leave.
Next, "Jorogumo's Seduction" weaves a tale of horror and deception. Paul Todio, a writer seeking solace in Japan's Izu Peninsula, finds himself drawn into the seductive web of a mysterious young woman named Yumiko, only to discover she's the vessel for a Jorogumo, a spider-woman from Japanese folklore. "Kayako: The Woman with Glaring Eyes" plunges you into Tokyo's Halloween chaos, where Yumiko Kakizaki is lured into an abandoned house with a dark history. What begins as a party turns into a gruesome bloodbath as a malevolent spirit, Kayako Seiki, rises from the shadows to exact her revenge. Yumiko and her friends must escape the horrors within the cursed house, but the glare of Kayako's vengeful eyes may be the last thing they ever see.
In "I Stole the Haunted Okiku Doll", a simple act of theft spirals into a nightmare when a young girl steals the infamous Okiku doll from a Buddhist temple. Unbeknownst to her, the doll is cursed, its lifelike features concealing a malevolent spirit that begins to wreak havoc on her family. As the strange and terrifying events unfold, they must confront the dark force that seeks to claim them one by one. This haunting tale will make you think twice about the innocent-looking dolls in your own home.
The collection closes with "The Teke Teke Saved My Life", where Miyumi's life, scarred by loss and cruelty, takes a darker turn when she's cornered by her bullies at a deserted train station. But just as violence threatens her life, an unexpected savior arrives—the Teke Teke, a vengeful spirit known for her brutal retribution. Splitting her enemies in half, the Teke Teke offers a chilling form of justice. But in saving Miyumi, the spirit's wrathful justice might bring consequences far worse than death.
