Descrizione The history of the Papacy during the Avignon Captivity (1309-1377) and the Western Schism (1378-1417) represents one of the most challenging periods in the history of the Catholic Church. The decision to relocate the Papal court to Avignon under Pope Clement V led to nearly seventy years of Papal rule outside Rome, creating tensions between the French-influenced Papacy and the broader Church.
